Query blocks for live tables, lists and charts of event data

Insert a query block in a dynamic document, pick a source, add columns from related records, filter, sort and group, and show the rows as a table, list, cards or chart.

A query block is a live view of event data inside a document. It asks the event for rows, such as crew, activities or requests, and shows them every time the document loads, so the document is never out of date. A block can show its rows as a table, a list, detail cards or a chart.

Inserting a Query Block

Type / in the editor and choose Data Table for a blank block, or one of the presets, which start with columns already chosen:

PresetStarts with
Crew RosterFirst name, last name, title, phone, company
Activity ScheduleName, start, end, location
Request SummaryModule, resource type, approved, requested by
Advance OverviewName, collaborator, area, request count
Contact ListFirst name, last name, title, email, phone, filtered to points of contact

Presets are a starting point: change any column, filter or setting afterwards.

Choosing a Source

A blank block shows Pick a source. Choose what each row is:

  • Crew Member
  • Collaborator
  • Area
  • Activity
  • Advance
  • Request
  • Question
  • Resource
  • File
  • Order
  • Task

Every block only ever returns rows from the current event.

Adding Columns

Click Column in the block's toolbar, then Add column. The picker lists the source's own fields first, including its custom attributes, then its related records. Click into a related record, such as a crew member's Collaborator, to add that record's fields: one row per crew member with their company's name, and no join to set up. A back button returns to the previous level.

When a related record can have many entries, such as an activity's participants, the column can show a count, a preview or every entry. A block can expand at most two of these many-entry relationships.

Custom Column adds a column of your own that exists only in this document, as Text, Number, Checkbox, Select or Date. You fill its values in by hand, which suits channel assignments, confirmation ticks or notes.

Rename a column's header to something cleaner, and reorder columns by dragging the headers or with Move up and Move down.

Filtering

Click Filter, then Add filter. A filter is a field, an operator such as is, is not, contains, is empty, is any of, before or after, and a value. To make a filter follow a document variable instead of a fixed value, click the pin in the value and choose Use variable. This is what lets one document serve every collaborator, area or date.

Sorting and Grouping

Sort orders the rows by a field, ascending or descending. Group splits the rows into sections by a field's value, such as requests by collaborator; groups are listed alphabetically. You cannot group by a custom attribute or across a many-entry relationship.

Display, Charts and Export

Under the block's More options menu:

  • Display mode switches between Table, List, Detail and Chart. Charts can be bar, line, area, pie, radar or radial.
  • Table style is Default, Striped, Bordered or Compact.
  • Export CSV downloads the rows the block is showing.

The data loads when the document opens and again when a variable changes. To see changes made since, reload the document.
